What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a screw shaped fixture placed in the jawbone to act as a base to support a new tooth or teeth.

What is needed to have a new tooth/teeth with dental implants?
Typically three parts are needed:

1) The Dental Implant: This fixture is placed in your jaw and acts as the anchor/support for your new tooth/teeth.
2) The Abutment: The implant is under your gum/gingiva, the abutment is connected to the implant and makes the transition from under the gum to above the gum in order to connect and hold a tooth/teeth. These come in a variety of shapes and sizes which helps the doctor give the patient the best fitting and cosmetically pleasing outcome possible.
3) The tooth/teeth: A single tooth placed and the implant/abutment is a crown/cap (it is not removed by the patient). Multiple teeth placed on implants can be a bridge (not removed by the patient such as a conventional fixed bridge or a hybrid bridge) or a denture/plate which snaps on the implants (it is removed by the patient for hygiene).
